Chart to Heart

Global Culture and Engagement Firm

Chart to Heart is led by two U.S. Army Veterans, a husband-and-wife team, John Henry, and Portia Scott. Together they are on a mission to help individuals and companies succeed by leveraging skills they’ve become proficient in over the course of their global careers.

Born in South Central, Los Angeles, John Henry Scott III has had the opportunity to live and witness the human element in many settings.

His journey from adolescence into adulthood, and a global professional career in business, has provided him a unique perspective on people and what makes them tick.

With a diverse career in science, executive management, operational excellence, civic service, manufacturing and defense, John Henry moved into the technology space in 2013. The work was highly technical but lacked intentional focus on the human element.

Because of his training he had the ability to thrive in that space, but also as a pastor, knew the power of human connection very deeply. In 2014 the company initiated a cultural transformation project.

Soon after the project became his own. He had the opportunity to travel the United States connecting the dots between the business and its people. In 2017 the company he worked for experienced merger prompting a need to prioritize cultural integration on a global scale.

This afforded him another opportunity to explore many different cultures, discover a deep understanding of how business operates globally, and learn what it takes to develop meaningful human connections that strengthens businesses.

By 2021 he knew it was time for something new. He was clear on his abilities to understand, develop and execute winning business strategies. So, he took the leap into entrepreneurship.

After a six-week sabbatical he asked himself several questions:

How can I add value to organizations and businesses that need what I do, whether they know it or not?

How do I bring quality coaching and consulting to businesses who otherwise would not have access to proven global expertise?

What can I do to help people create generational wealth?

Why do I want to do this work when there are less risks in a corporate role?

After answering these questions, Chart to Heart the brand was born.

But, where does the full heart of the matter come in?

Portia Scott is a military veteran and she met John Henry while on her second tour of duty in Iraq.

After leaving the U.S. Army in 2006, she went to work for an investment firm as an Executive Administrator while completing her business degree knowing there was much more in her. Working with the technology department she got the opportunity to shadow project managers who showed her the ropes.

This time allowed her to get an understanding of the business needs, but also get a close up view of what the people were experiencing, what frustrated them, what was important to them and how that was impacting the business overall.

She learned when employees have the opportunity to live their lives outside of their occupation they tend to be more productive. While pay is important, people want to know they are making impact. They want to know they are being seen and heard.

After completing her undergraduate in Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston, MA; Portia because an in demand and trusted Project Manager. She spearheaded multi-million-dollar projects that improved both client and employee experience.

Clients and employees both boasts that Portia’s project management style helped the business to operate more effectively and freed up time in their schedules to allow them to take proper care of themselves and their families.

Portia had lived the dream. She got her education, worked hard, got married, had children and was making a difference in her occupation. One day when looking at Mother’s Day project for her young daughter, she discovered a belief her daughter had that she did not anticipate.

When asked what she loved about her mother, her daughter wrote, “She loves what she does and loves working.” It was a beautiful realization that her daughter had a living example of how to do it all.

Further down that same sheet of paper, the question was asked what do you wish you mother did less of? The response was, “work less.” She realized it was time for a change. Yes, she was juggling all these balls and being a wonder woman in life, but the heart of the matter – family – may have been missing out. She had not been engaged fully in some moments and it was time to change.

After a year of contemplating, a life-changing trip to South Africa, and a series of intentional decision to be fully present, Portia turned in her resignation.

She recognized that time with her family was paramount and could not be sacrificed in the name of work. After starting a globally recognized Podcast, a virtual show, a media company, and a project management boutique, in May 2022, she joined Chart to Heart as Principal Operations Officer.

Together, John Henry and Portia have taken their individual experiences and brought them together to serve business around the world.

Having had the opportunity to see what was important to them individually, as a family and taking the time to align purpose with skillset, they provide simple practical tools that will humanize business, develop and sustain winning company cultures, and produce positive business results.
